Intensive Training – Weekends In London

London

The intensive training programme in New Cross, London, takes place monthly on weekends.

The program takes place over eight weekends per year, plus five days at our Spring Course in Birmingham in 2026, and an exam weekend in the summer. It attracts talented artists, educators, and those working in therapeutic settings from across the UK, as well as Europe, Asia, and North America. The training includes practical classes in rhythmics, aural training (Relative Solfa), improvisation, and Plastique Animée, along with the principles and practice of Dalcroze Eurhythmics and related studies.

In 2025/26, the New Cross training centre is offering enrolment at the Foundation, Intermediate, and Professional Certificate levels.

Foundation Award

The Foundation Award includes practical classes in rhythmics, aural training (Relative Solfa), and improvisation, as well as the principles and practice of Dalcroze Eurhythmics and related studies. Final exams for an accredited award involve practical assessments in rhythmics, aural training, improvisation, and a written submission. Successful candidates receive an accredited Foundation Award and, if they choose to continue, can progress to Year Two, the Intermediate Year.

Intermediate Award

Studies for the Intermediate Award build on Foundation training. By this point, students usually apply what they have learned to their work. After completing and passing the practical exams in Rhythmics, Aural training, Improvisation, and the written submission, candidates are entitled to advertise that they incorporate Dalcroze principles and practices in their professional roles, such as music teachers and therapists. The South-East London Intermediate course includes eight training weekends, our Spring Course, and an exam weekend.

Professional Certificate

Completion of the Professional Certificate requires a third year of training. The final exams include assessments in teaching and choral conducting, as well as personal practical exams and a written submission. Good piano skills are necessary to undertake the evaluations, in addition to any specialist instrument. Holders of the Professional Certificate are entitled to advertise that they hold a professional qualification in teaching Dalcroze Eurhythmics. They may also continue to the Licence training course, which is the highest level of training offered by Dalcroze UK. The Licence course is a postgraduate training designed for those who work or plan to work with adult musicians, dancers, teachers, or students in conservatoires of music and dance or universities. Licentiates may also be invited to assist in training professional Dalcroze students and may proceed to entrance exams for the Diplôme Supérieur offered by the Institut Jaques-Dalcroze, Geneva.

Classes are taught by teachers Dr. Karin Greenhead (Director of Studies), Jacqueline Vann, Kaye Barker, Dr. Eugenia Arus (from Barcelona), and Andrew Davidson, all of whom hold the Diplôme Supérieur, the highest qualification level in Dalcroze Eurhythmics.

Accreditation

Dalcroze UK qualifications are offered in association with the Dalcroze Eurhythmics International Examination Board (DEIEB) and recognised by the Institut Jaques-Dalcroze, Geneva, Switzerland.

“A qualification in Dalcroze Eurhythmics had always been on my to-do list, so I jumped at the chance to sign up for the Foundation intensive training weekend course in September 2022. Best thing I’ve done in years!  Motivational and inspiring teaching – a lot of ideas and material to work with, skills to develop and apply.  I loved the rhythmics classes and the whole-body conducting in particular.  I’ve made good progress in improvisation. Great atmosphere, nice surroundings, and learning with a group of people I now consider friends – highly recommended.”
