SUMMARY:Taster Day - Leeds Conservatoire
DESCRIPTION:Dalcroze Eurhythmics is an approach to teaching musicianship which was developed by Émile Jaques-Dalcroze in the latter part of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century. Students learn together in a class setting\, through a combination of individual tasks\, pair and group work. It is an approach which can be used in the teaching of very small children\, and also has much to offer music professionals. \n\nParticipants will experience the three main branches of: \nRhythmics     Experiencing music through movement. Musical phrase and rhythm become something physical\, dynamic\, and memorable. \nAural Training   Exploring what music feels like\, linking listening with perception involving the whole body. \nSolfa   Giving singing names (do – re – mi …) to notes within the scale\, in order to develop a sense of their relationship to one another\, and build foundations upon which to teach harmony. \nImprovisation  Exploring communication through music. Playing and singing with the aim of encouraging a response in movement \nWe will also explore some ways in which Dalcroze Eurhythmics can be applied in the teaching of young instrumentalists and singers. \n\nDalcroze Eurhythmics is taught at a number of junior conservatoires and specialist youth music schemes in the UK\, including Yorkshire Young Musicians (YYM) in the Yorkshire region. Dalcroze has the capacity to promote freedom of movement\, expression and imagination in children’s singing and instrumental playing. Classes aim to develop children’s confidence in their own ideas\, their musical memory\, their ability to listen attentively and perceptively\, and their ability to work with others. Today’s tutors all teach Dalcroze on the YYM programme in Leeds and Hull. \n\nYour Teachers\n\nAlison Wise MA (Hons)\, MA\, PGCE\, Dalcroze Professional Certificate\n\nAlison grew up in West Yorkshire\, and studied music at St John’s College\, Cambridge and Durham University. Whilst working as a peripatetic instrumental teacher\, Alison took part in a couple of Dalcroze workshops\, where she was struck by the creativity and intuitive nature of the Dalcroze approach to music teaching. This led her to study for the Dalcroze Professional Certificate through evening classes at the Royal Northern College of Music. Alison enjoys making music with young people of all ages. She teaches Dalcroze Eurhythmics at Yorkshire Young Musicians’ Hull centre\, and is music teacher for Coram House\, the Junior school at Ackworth School\, Pontefract. Alison also continues to enjoy teaching cello and piano\, and is currently studying for an advanced qualification in Dalcroze Eurhythmics\, the Dalcroze Licence. \n\n\n  \nSophie Thiruchelvam BA (Hons)\, Dalcroze Professional Certificate\n\n\nSophie has been working in Leeds as a peripatetic singing teacher and workshop facilitator since 2004.In her working week she teaches people from the ages of 6 months to 60+ and loves seeing the positive effect music has for her students. She teaches Dalcroze at Yorkshire young musicians\, sharing the role with Aileen and collaborating with Alison for project days for the students. Her Dalcroze journey began in 2006 and it was an instant connection for her. She has seen the benefits of the approach in her teaching and for herself as a musician\, she gained her certificate in 2016 and hopes the day will be the start of someone else’s exciting Dalcroze journey. \n\n\n  \n  \n\nAileen Williams BMus (Hons)\, PGCE with specialist strings training\, Dalcroze Professional Certificate\n\nAileen is a strings teacher and has worked with Bolton Music Service since 2001\, delivering group and individual strings lessons\, wider opportunities lessons\, and leading and tutoring youth strings groups and orchestras of all levels and ages. She studied music at the University of Manchester and went on to complete a PGCE with specialist strings training at the Royal Northern College of Music and the Manchester Metropolitan University. This was where she first encountered Dalcroze Eurythmics and found that it had a huge impact on how she taught\, played and experienced music. In 2016 she was fortunate to complete her Certificate in Dalcroze and since then has used it more actively within her strings teaching. She is delighted to be currently teaching full Dalcroze Eurythmics classes at Yorkshire Young Musicians in Leeds alongside Sophie Thiruchelvam. \n\nTimetable\n09:30 Arrival & Registration \n10:00 – Rhythmics. \n11:45 – What is Dalcroze \n12:15- Lunch \n13:00 – Improvisation \n14:10 – Aural Training \n15:25 – Workshop: Incorporating Dalcroze \nEurhythmics into teaching young \ninstrumentalists and singers \n16:25 – Question and Answer session. \n16:45 – Close

SUMMARY:Plastique Animée Trios over Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Presenters: Dr Selma Odom & Mary Price-O’Connor \nSelma and Mary are intrigued about what is possible over zoom and would like to explore Plastique Animeé in trios. \nThe session will start off with a warm up\, asking the question what is a trio? Inviting participants to explore fully the possibilities of movement over zoom\, whilst using the environment and limitations of space to explore their movement vocabulary and involvement of the camera as audience. \nThey will then separate the participants into breakout rooms to explore in movement the various elements from the trio and create a Plastique Animeé  that will be shared with the rest of the group. \nRequirements \nPrior experience of Plastique Animeé would be an advantage. \nA laptop will be the best way to experience the workshop. Participants will need to be dressed in clothes suitable for movement. \nThere will be a reflection of what works and participants would also gain an understanding of how to develop a Plastique Animeé practice. The end results will be discussed and recorded. \nRegistration closes 22nd August at 9am UK time!

SUMMARY:Taking a Dalcrozian approach to Aural Training
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Jacqueline Vann \nAural Training is one of the three main branches of the Dalcroze method and is intrinsically linked to the other two – rhythmics and improvisation. The uniqueness of the training lies in Jaques-Dalcroze’s understanding that “To be a sensitive musician\, it is necessary to appreciate the nuance not only of pitch but of the dynamic energy and the varying rapidity of the movements. These nuances must be appreciated not only by the ear but also by the muscular sense” (1921/1980\, p.51). \nThe session will look at a Dalcrozian approach to ear-training\, showing how gesture\, the use of space and group work enable students to explore pitch\, intervals\, texture\, the journey of the music and so on. It will show the aural training in action. \n(note that individuals on the Group 4 training course receive this as part of their package so don’t need to register). \nRegistration closes on 21st August at 9am UK time!

SUMMARY:Rhythmics and the Exploration of the Piano
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Silvia Del Bianco\nDalcroze Eurhythmics education helps to develop the body as the first instrument. The “Rhythmics and piano discovery” course was offered to 6-year-old children who take a course twice a week in which instrumental playing (piano) is integrated. This specificity of the Institut Jaques-Dalcroze has led us to set up a research project in collaboration with the Université de Genève and the Haute école de Musique\, in order to be able to analyze some elements of the children’s development. Indeed\, the learning and the transfer of these motor\, cognitive and affective patterns can play an interesting role in understanding the mechanisms allowing the transfer of these patterns from gross motor skills to fine motor skills. Through the video of a recorded course\, this presentation will help to understand the stakes of this experience. \nRegistration closes 17th August at 9am UK time!

SUMMARY:What Is Dalcroze Eurhythmics?
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Jacqueline Vann\nDalcroze Eurhythmics is both the name of the method and the name of the person who created the method – Emile Jaques-Dalcroze. Often known simply as Dalcroze\, it is an active method of music education that puts the body at the centre of learning. It developed at a very interesting moment in time historically and with respect to education in general. The method is as relevant today as it was at the end of the 19th century (one might argue that it is more relevant.)  This session will look at the influences that shaped the method\, the way learning happens and the role of teacher and learner. There will be games and exercises to illustrate the way the method works and this session will be interesting for anyone wanting an overview of the key principles of Dalcroze Eurhythmics. \nRegistration closes on 15th August at 9am UK time! \n

SUMMARY:Here Be Dragons
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPresenter – Dr Karin Greenhead\n(click image for biography) \nIn this seminar Karin will discuss the issues involved in researching her own practice of DR and DE. The session will cover her aims and questions\, methodology and methods and the issues that arise when the researcher is also a source of data and the teacher of the students interviewed in the case studies. This entails closely minding the gaps between experiential knowing\, telling\, understanding and meaning. She will touch on significant discoveries and their implications for music-movement research and the teaching\, learning and practice of music generally\, and address how the findings supported her conclusions. Along the way she will consider the role of serendipity\, the surprising benefits that can arise when research does not go according to plan and the management of a large and complex qualitative study that both complements and challenges much current thinking in music-related research fields. Finally\, time permitting\, she would like to try an exercise in phenomenological evocative description as a first step to the kind of evocative writing essential to the realisation of a research project of this kind. \nWe will send out some documents for the participants to read before the seminar. \n

SUMMARY:Dalcroze And The Creative Autonomous Performer
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n\nPresenter – Diane Daly\n(click image for biography) \nDiane presents a research paper on the impact of Dalcroze Eurhythmics on fostering creativity and autonomy in classical instrumental pedagogy. Her research took the form of an arts practice investigation which included devising\, rehearsing\, performing and documenting two performance events\, drawing on Dalcroze Eurhythmic techniques\, rather than conventional classical music approaches. The paper concludes with a discussion on key findings around creativity and autonomy\, and the proposal that a Dalcroze approach has the potential to greatly enhance students experience of performance music education\, as well as improve performance quality and satisfaction in their ensuing professional careers. This short 20 minute presentation presents an overview of the research paper. \nClick below to RSVP and reserve your space! \n  \n

SUMMARY:A Geography Of The Voice
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPresenter – Ava Loiacono\n(click image for biography) \nWhat is between the spoken voice and the singing voice? \nThis workshop aims at exploring the possibilities between these two areas of the voice. Vowels as ringing sounds\, consonants as sculpture\, essence. The work will be physical within the limits of one’s own space. The aim is to give value to our sound by presenting it and building it up.

SUMMARY:Curves and Straight Lines
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPresenter – Kathryn Kay\n(click image for biography) \nCurves and straight lines \nInspiring children to improvise music sequences using movement. \nIn her online children’s classes\, Kathryn has incorporated more improvisation into Rhythmics lessons than is normally possible in the room. In this workshop she will lead the group through some of the processes that have worked well\, how a multi-modal approach (using Kandinsky\, examples from the everyday world\, sport\, movement and music) have inspired her classes to create some wonderful first explorations into composition/improvisation. \nDuring the class\, you will create your own music and movement improvised compositions and share\, so please bring a few everyday household items\, as well as an orchestral instrument or a piano.

SUMMARY:The Science of Learning – applying neuroscience in the Dalcroze classroom
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPresenter – Jacqueline Vann\n(click image for biography) \nCognitive neuroscience\, now more than a century old\, is a scientific field bridging the disciplines of psychology\, biology and neuroscience and seeks to explain how we learn based on how the brain functions. The enthusiasm\, as new findings emerge\, is tempered with resistance as to whether research on the brain can have any direct effect on teaching.  At the same time\, however\, research is often misinterpreted\, leading to unsound solutions for learning issues (e.g. Brain Gym and teaching to VAK learning styles). In this session we’ll take a look at the research and how it can give us a framework for teaching as well as how Dalcroze fulfils many of the criteria of the science of learning.
