SUMMARY:Spring Into Dalcroze 2025!
DESCRIPTION:Dalcroze UK International Spring Course\nDalcroze UK International Spring Course 2025 – an unmissable opportunity to find out all you need to know about Dalcroze Eurhythmics! \n\nThe annual Dalcroze UK Spring Course welcomes all those interested in discovering Dalcroze Eurhythmics\, as well as those keen to develop their practice\, meet old friends and colleagues\, and make new ones. \nThis course is for you\, especially if… \n\nyou are curious about the method and looking for a way to develop a deeper understanding of music\, performance\, teaching and learning\nhave taken part in a Taster Day or joined an online Zoom Cafe\nhave been involved in Dalcroze in the past and want to reconnect\nare an experienced Dalcroze practitioner looking to refresh or deepen your knowledge\, re-connect\, and be inspired by others…this is the next step\n\nThere are classes for complete beginners\, students\, and experienced practitioners. For three days you will work with some of the best national and international Dalcroze teachers while enjoying the beautiful spaces and pianos at the Royal Northern College of Music. \nDalcroze Eurhythmics is the only music education method grounded in the relationship between sound and movement. Group lessons offer a unique\, deep\, and personal way of experiencing and expressing music through the whole body. Through sensory integration\, it develops both musical and social abilities in listening\, responsiveness\, coordination\, imagination\, interpretation\, creativity\, and effective communication. \nIn the UK and ROI the contemporary use of Dalcroze in education\, performance\, related arts\, therapy\, and well-being is witness to its far-reaching and inclusive nature and the range of its applications. \nThe course begins on Monday 14th April with registration from 4.00 pm followed by a welcome session and drinks reception. \n\nMeet The Teachers!\nConfirmed teachers for the course include Eugènia Arús\, Kaye Barker\, Karin Greenhead\, Jacqueline Vann & Ruth Jones. More to be confirmed later. \nClick here to find out more about them. \n\nWhat Happens at the Spring Course?\nSessions run daily from 8:45 and include Movement Warm-up\, Rhythmics\, Aural (Solfa/Solfège)\, Improvisation\, and creative movement. Plus\, a range of workshops and special sessions. \nIn addition\, we have a variety of workshops\, demonstrations and interviews. Details of these will be coming soon! \nWatch this video to see what happens! \n\nWe’ll share the timetable here as soon as it’s finalised. In the meantime\, you can look at the timetable from last year by clicking here. \n\nWorkshops\nMovement Techniques For Dalcroze Practitioners\, with Ruth Jones – Ruth will lead a movement technique session\, drawing from Somatics\, Release technique\, Cunningham technique\, Humphrey /Limon and more . The session will explore flow and weight\, breath and swing \, use of the floor\, getting in and out of the floor\, articulation of the feet\, rotation\, economy of movement\, changes of dynamics\, shape and use of space and more. This workshop is suitable for all levels. \nPlastique Animée for Beginners\, with Kaye Barker – Plastique Animée is the title Emile Jaques-Dalcroze gave to a movement piece which explores and embodies elements of a piece of music. This can be its form. melodic line\, rhythms\, dynamics\, character and so on. A plastique ‘shows’ an audience what is happening in a piece of repertoire. The result is dance-like yet different and is a deeply rewarding and exciting way to experience a piece of music. These workshops are ideal for newcomers to Dalcroze but also for experienced students of the method. \nDynamic Rehearsal\, with Karin Greenhead – Dynamic Rehearsal (DR) is a highly effective application of Dalcroze principles to the rehearsal and performance of musical repertoire developed experimentally by Karin while teaching string-players at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) beginning in 1992. Its aim is to enable participants to enter a process of clarifying and refining interpretation and performance and to improve communication skills. DR has been demonstrated many times in workshops nationally and internationally and has featured in a number of conferences\, research articles\, master’s dissertations and Doctoral theses. Participants include both performers and listeners and performers can be soloists or ensembles. The workshop will be in two parts: 1. An introduction to DR with preparatory exercises and techniques that will be used in 2. Session 2. Performers (soloists or ensembles) are taken through the DR process. Listeners participate by giving feedback and sometimes more actively. Listeners are invited to give feedback on what they notice. Those wishing to perform must bring the score of their pieces and should know the section they want to work on from memory (sufficient to get away from the score). Dress as for rhythmics. Those wishing to perform in session 2 must attend session 1. \nPedagogy: Peer Teaching Practice\, with Eugénia Arùs and Hélène Nicolet – All levels of Spring Course participants are welcome to join this workshop as active participants and/or observers. This workshop offers an opportunity to practise teaching adults and receive feedback from peers and experienced Diplômées. Students preparing Licence and Professional Certificate examinations and holders of a Dalcroze Licence or Professional Certificate may apply to teach an exercise or short exercise sequence suitable for adults. The exercise sequence may be designed for a rhythmics class\, rhythmics-solfège\, aural training or improvisation. The workshop is particularly beneficial for those teaching improvisation for their exercise/s. These peer-teaching sessions are always interesting and informative. If you would like to attend and wish to teach please inform the administrator as soon as possible. If the group is large a small number may be asked to be “the class” for some exercises. If the group is very large we will split it and run two simultaneous classes. \nSkip Tease! The Dalcroze skips\, with Jacqueline Vann – Skipping is joyful and fun\, and in Dalcroze Today Marie-Laure Bachman writes about “….youngsters who beg for ‘more skipping!’” Perhaps even more importantly\, Dalcroze said about the exercises in skips…”These exercises provide special technical preparation for all the following lessons which involve lively body movements and require lightness\, elasticity and suppleness of leg movements in lively tempos.” Skips are good for coordination\, independence of limbs\, and strength\, and they can lead to rhythmic accuracy in performance.  This will be a very active workshop exploring the place of ‘the Six Skips’ in teaching and learning today. \n What is Dalcroze\, with Jacqueline Vann – This is a short\, introductory workshop for beginners on Dalcroze the man and the method. If you are new to Dalcroze\, this workshop is for you. You will learn about Emile Jaques-Dalcroze\, why he developed the work\, the fundamental principles behind the work\, and simple games that illustrate some of the different kinds of exercises used in teaching. \nPiano Strategies for Dalcroze Exercises\, with Andrew Davidson – This workshop explores approaches to piano improvisation that effectively support learning and teaching in Dalcroze Eurhythmics. Topics include using the left hand to incite everyday movement\, shaping metric exercises through melodic material\, and applying harmonic vocabularies to free movement in real time. Participants will develop strategies for essential exercises in a Dalcroze context. We will examine the technical and expressive processes involved in creating spontaneous dialogue between sound and motion. This workshop is ideal for pianists new to Dalcroze\, as well as experienced Dalcrozians looking to deepen their approach at the keyboard. \nResearch & Publication: Toward a PhD in Performer Training\, with Andrew Davidson – This presentation explores the process of developing a PhD through published papers\, reflecting on the intersections of research\, teaching\, and artistic practice in performer training. Drawing on my own journey\, I will discuss my prior publications\, the method of thematic analysis\, the role of reflexivity\, and the challenge of navigating expectations in a university conservatoire. The session will offer insights into structuring research within a practice-based framework and the evolving relationship between publication and doctoral inquiry. A Q&A will follow\, welcoming conversation with anyone who identifies as “research curious” but can’t yet imagine themselves pursuing a PhD. \nExam Test Practice\, with Jacqueline Vann\, Kaye Barker and Karin Greenhead – These sessions will run for students on the Dalcroze UK courses Foundation\, Intermediate and Professional Certificate levels. Qualified teachers who would like the opportunity to enhance their practise and skills are welcome to join in. Licence students who wish to participate in these exam test practice sessions should contact the Director of Studies beforehand and discuss what they would like to practice. \n\nApplications for bursaries close on 23rd February 2025. Click here to apply for a bursary\n \nnote: this course is non-residential \nCancellation policy: \nAmount payable if you cancel after registration: \n2 months before – 10%\n1 month before – 50%\nLess than one month before – 80%

SUMMARY:Dalcroze UK International Summer School 2024!
DESCRIPTION:Be inspired\, be joyful\, be you….. \nThis unique 6-day residential course is for music educators (from Early Years to Conservatory level) as well as for performers\, conductors\, instrumental teachers\, actors\, dancers\, community musicians and anyone who is curious to know more about the principles and practice of Dalcroze Eurhythmics. \nThere will be 3 levels: Newcomers to Dalcroze\, Intermediate & Advanced \n Newcomers to Dalcroze \nMaybe you’ve heard the name Dalcroze and have an idea that it’s about understanding the language of music through movement and the use of the whole body and are curious to experience it for yourself. \nMaybe you’re a classroom/instrumental teacher wanting to know how you can deepen your student’s (and your own!) understanding of music and to enrich their performances. \nMaybe you are in another field of the arts\, an amateur or someone who wants an opportunity simply to play in the realm of movement and sound. Maybe you’ve been on a Taster Day or attended a Zoom Café and really want to know more. This is the next step. \nEvery day you will have a class in the three main branches of Dalcroze (Rhythmics\, Aural Training & Improvisation) and movement. There will be additional classes that you can choose to attend to broaden your understanding and develop your skills. \nAll in a safe and joyful environment. \nIntermediate & Advanced \nThis year we’re taking a deep dive and focusing on IMPROVISATION – from many different perspectives – in movement\, rhythmics\, aural training\, improvisation and drama. \nAs usual\, there will be daily classes in the three main branches to refresh and re-energise you and your work. \nTutors \nWhile teaching all three branches through the week\, here is a taste of what each tutor on the course will be doing particularly in the field of IMPROVISATION. \nFrançoise Lombard (International guest tutor from Canada): musical strategies for improvisation for rhythmics exercises – how to analyse pieces through movement to build and create improvisation. \nAndrew Davidson (UK): a playful\, game-like approach that applies drama exercises to musical improvisation for the body\, voice and instruments. \nAlison Wise (UK): stimulating improvisation from existing compositions – short pieces by Bernard Reichel. \nRuth Jones (movement\, UK): ‘relishing the moment of potential creativity in movement’ – exercises to gain improvisation skills leading to solo\, duet and group movement improvisation. \nJacqueline Vann & Kaye Barker (UK): developing new vocal sounds for improvisation. \nKaye Barker (UK): playing for movement using simple improvisation techniques \nKarin Greenhead: using materials to inspire different kinds and qualities of sound in musical improvisation. \nWhat’s Included? \nAll tickets include the full course content\, refreshments and a buffet lunch each day. Residential tickets include 6 nights accommodation from 4th August. Accommodation is in a shared flat. All occupants have an ensuite private room with a shared kitchen and sitting area. \nClick here to read more about the accommodation. \nBursaries \nApplications closed on 31st May 2024.

It will take place over three sessions with a Zoom follow up and attendance at all sessions is required. The workshop is reserved for experienced Dalcrozians at Certificate and Licence level and qualified Dalcroze professionals. This is being delivered  by Mary Price O’Connor as part of her practice led dance research MA at the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance. This workshop will be interdisciplinary\, and participants will be introduced to multimodal elements for reflection and to journal their experience. \nDynamic Reharsal with Karin Greenhead \nDynamic Rehearsal (DR) is a highly effective application of Dalcroze principles to the rehearsal and performance of musical repertoire developed experimentally by Karin while teaching string-players at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) beginning in 1992. SUMMARY:Taster Day - Leeds Conservatoire
DESCRIPTION:Dalcroze Eurhythmics is an approach to teaching musicianship which was developed by Émile Jaques-Dalcroze in the latter part of the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century. Students learn together in a class setting\, through a combination of individual tasks\, pair and group work. It is an approach which can be used in the teaching of very small children\, and also has much to offer music professionals. \n\nParticipants will experience the three main branches of: \nRhythmics     Experiencing music through movement. Musical phrase and rhythm become something physical\, dynamic\, and memorable. \nAural Training   Exploring what music feels like\, linking listening with perception involving the whole body. \nSolfa   Giving singing names (do – re – mi …) to notes within the scale\, in order to develop a sense of their relationship to one another\, and build foundations upon which to teach harmony. \nImprovisation  Exploring communication through music. Playing and singing with the aim of encouraging a response in movement \nWe will also explore some ways in which Dalcroze Eurhythmics can be applied in the teaching of young instrumentalists and singers. \n\nDalcroze Eurhythmics is taught at a number of junior conservatoires and specialist youth music schemes in the UK\, including Yorkshire Young Musicians (YYM) in the Yorkshire region. Dalcroze has the capacity to promote freedom of movement\, expression and imagination in children’s singing and instrumental playing. Classes aim to develop children’s confidence in their own ideas\, their musical memory\, their ability to listen attentively and perceptively\, and their ability to work with others. Today’s tutors all teach Dalcroze on the YYM programme in Leeds and Hull. \n\nYour Teachers\n\nAlison Wise MA (Hons)\, MA\, PGCE\, Dalcroze Professional Certificate\n\nAlison grew up in West Yorkshire\, and studied music at St John’s College\, Cambridge and Durham University. Whilst working as a peripatetic instrumental teacher\, Alison took part in a couple of Dalcroze workshops\, where she was struck by the creativity and intuitive nature of the Dalcroze approach to music teaching. This led her to study for the Dalcroze Professional Certificate through evening classes at the Royal Northern College of Music. Alison enjoys making music with young people of all ages. She teaches Dalcroze Eurhythmics at Yorkshire Young Musicians’ Hull centre\, and is music teacher for Coram House\, the Junior school at Ackworth School\, Pontefract. Alison also continues to enjoy teaching cello and piano\, and is currently studying for an advanced qualification in Dalcroze Eurhythmics\, the Dalcroze Licence. \n\n\n  \nSophie Thiruchelvam BA (Hons)\, Dalcroze Professional Certificate\n\n\nSophie has been working in Leeds as a peripatetic singing teacher and workshop facilitator since 2004.In her working week she teaches people from the ages of 6 months to 60+ and loves seeing the positive effect music has for her students. She teaches Dalcroze at Yorkshire young musicians\, sharing the role with Aileen and collaborating with Alison for project days for the students. Her Dalcroze journey began in 2006 and it was an instant connection for her. She has seen the benefits of the approach in her teaching and for herself as a musician\, she gained her certificate in 2016 and hopes the day will be the start of someone else’s exciting Dalcroze journey. \n\n\n  \n  \n\nAileen Williams BMus (Hons)\, PGCE with specialist strings training\, Dalcroze Professional Certificate\n\nAileen is a strings teacher and has worked with Bolton Music Service since 2001\, delivering group and individual strings lessons\, wider opportunities lessons\, and leading and tutoring youth strings groups and orchestras of all levels and ages. She studied music at the University of Manchester and went on to complete a PGCE with specialist strings training at the Royal Northern College of Music and the Manchester Metropolitan University. This was where she first encountered Dalcroze Eurythmics and found that it had a huge impact on how she taught\, played and experienced music. In 2016 she was fortunate to complete her Certificate in Dalcroze and since then has used it more actively within her strings teaching. She is delighted to be currently teaching full Dalcroze Eurythmics classes at Yorkshire Young Musicians in Leeds alongside Sophie Thiruchelvam. \n\nTimetable\n09:30 Arrival & Registration \n10:00 – Rhythmics. \n11:45 – What is Dalcroze \n12:15- Lunch \n13:00 – Improvisation \n14:10 – Aural Training \n15:25 – Workshop: Incorporating Dalcroze \nEurhythmics into teaching young \ninstrumentalists and singers \n16:25 – Question and Answer session. \n16:45 – Close

SUMMARY:Plastique Animée Trios over Zoom
DESCRIPTION:Presenters: Dr Selma Odom & Mary Price-O’Connor \nSelma and Mary are intrigued about what is possible over zoom and would like to explore Plastique Animeé in trios. \nThe session will start off with a warm up\, asking the question what is a trio? Inviting participants to explore fully the possibilities of movement over zoom\, whilst using the environment and limitations of space to explore their movement vocabulary and involvement of the camera as audience. \nThey will then separate the participants into breakout rooms to explore in movement the various elements from the trio and create a Plastique Animeé  that will be shared with the rest of the group. \nRequirements \nPrior experience of Plastique Animeé would be an advantage. \nA laptop will be the best way to experience the workshop. Participants will need to be dressed in clothes suitable for movement. \nThere will be a reflection of what works and participants would also gain an understanding of how to develop a Plastique Animeé practice. The end results will be discussed and recorded. \nRegistration closes 22nd August at 9am UK time!

SUMMARY:Taking a Dalcrozian approach to Aural Training
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Jacqueline Vann \nAural Training is one of the three main branches of the Dalcroze method and is intrinsically linked to the other two – rhythmics and improvisation. The uniqueness of the training lies in Jaques-Dalcroze’s understanding that “To be a sensitive musician\, it is necessary to appreciate the nuance not only of pitch but of the dynamic energy and the varying rapidity of the movements. These nuances must be appreciated not only by the ear but also by the muscular sense” (1921/1980\, p.51). \nThe session will look at a Dalcrozian approach to ear-training\, showing how gesture\, the use of space and group work enable students to explore pitch\, intervals\, texture\, the journey of the music and so on. It will show the aural training in action. \n(note that individuals on the Group 4 training course receive this as part of their package so don’t need to register). \nRegistration closes on 21st August at 9am UK time!

SUMMARY:Rhythmics and the Exploration of the Piano
DESCRIPTION:Presenter: Silvia Del Bianco\nDalcroze Eurhythmics education helps to develop the body as the first instrument. The “Rhythmics and piano discovery” course was offered to 6-year-old children who take a course twice a week in which instrumental playing (piano) is integrated. This specificity of the Institut Jaques-Dalcroze has led us to set up a research project in collaboration with the Université de Genève and the Haute école de Musique\, in order to be able to analyze some elements of the children’s development. Indeed\, the learning and the transfer of these motor\, cognitive and affective patterns can play an interesting role in understanding the mechanisms allowing the transfer of these patterns from gross motor skills to fine motor skills. Through the video of a recorded course\, this presentation will help to understand the stakes of this experience. \nRegistration closes 17th August at 9am UK time!
