We are very excited to have the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama as the venue for our Summer School this year. Situated, conveniently, in the heart of Cardiff but overlooking the beautiful Bute Park, the college is perfectly situated for the 2018 International Dalcroze Summer School.  Liberty Severn Point, a short walk through the park, offers convenient, en-suite accommodation for all delegates.

As usual we offer classes in rhythmics, aural training and improvisation every day and an exciting and unique line up of workshops throughout the afternoons and two of the evenings. The workshops combine to give you an idea of the far-reaching applications of Dalcroze in music, education, drama and much more.

What’s on offer this year at the Dalcroze UK International Summer School?

Dip into Dalcroze – come and find out about Dalcroze Eurhythmics

This Summer School is a wonderful opportunity for you to find out about Dalcroze Eurhythmics; what it is, how you can benefit as a performer and how it can transform your teaching. Every day there will be classes in the three main branches of Dalcroze: rhythmics, aural training and improvisation (for further information go to https://dalcroze.org.uk/About-us/What-is-Dalcroze/). In the afternoons there will be a variety of workshops on offer for you to see how Dalcroze is used and applied in a number of different settings and for you to go deeper into the method.

Dalcroze Teachers – for all teachers of Dalcroze (Intermediate, Certificate & Licence level)

Do you need inspiration? Are you feeling a bit stale and need to find new teaching ideas or develop your own skills? Do you need a ‘Dalcroze fix’? The Summer School has just the thing for you. Alongside rhythmics, aural training and improvisation there will be films showing Dalcroze teaching in schools and private practice. There will also be workshop on teaching literacy and numeracy through music and movement in an Early Years setting and how to use Ringtime, the piece commissioned by Jean Middlemiss for the Dalcroze centenary in 2013, with your pupils – and much more.

String Players and Performers

If you are a string teacher and performer there will be specific workshops, alongside the three main branches, showing Dalcroze applied to violin teaching or finding out about tension and release in playing as well as working on your shoulders and arms in a movement class with Ruth Jones. Other workshops, such as Tai Chi & Dalcroze and getting children to move will also benefit you and your students in maintaining freedom of movement when practising and playing.

 

Workshops

Getting children and teenagers to move (Ruth Jones)

Sometimes older children can be reluctant to move. Ruth will offer some engaging ways to get your youngsters moving and creating.

Continuing Professional Development (Bethan Habron-James & Jacqueline Vann)

For those who are qualified Dalcroze teachers or who can use the name Dalcroze in their teaching (Intermediate, Certificate & Licence level).

Musicianship training to support instrumental learning (Bethan Habron-James)

This workshop explores how we can best support children’s instrumental learning away from the instrument, using a whole body approach in a group setting. Activities and games for musicianship training. Suitable for all.

An introduction to Plastique (Monica Wilkinson)

Plastique (or Plastique Animée) is the culmination of the work experienced in the rhythmics, aural training and improvisation classes. It is a means of analysing music through movement and space and making music ‘visible’.

Dalcroze in Schools & Private Practice (Jacqueline Vann)

Films of student submissions for the Certificate in Dalcroze Eurhythmics pedagogy module and from teachers in Canada in private practice. There will be a discussion on what makes the teaching specifically Dalcrozian. Open to all.

Teaching Literacy and Numeracy through music and movement (Monica Wilkinson)

This workshop explores a pilot project devised by Monica at Royal Conservatoire of Scotland for the Scottish Government on teaching literacy and numeracy through music and movement in the Early Years (age 4-6).

A demonstration with students: Dalcroze and violin teaching (Katie Wearing)

Katie has been teaching violin for many years and has published her own violin tutor method. This demonstration will be a Dalcroze approach to aural training in violin lessons.

Tai Chi & Dalcroze (Ava Loiacono)

The use of Tai Chi in the Certificate Training programme in Italy where students have benefited from the ability of Tai Chi to help with breathing, body control, flow and dissociation in movement.

Using ‘The Mask’ (Ava Loiacono)

This workshop is aimed at the more experienced Dalcroze student/teacher and introduces the ‘neutral mask’ created by Jacques Lecoq and Amleto Sartori. This is a phenomenal tool to develop ‘presence’ in the performer and bring awareness to what we communicate through body posture and gesture.

Exploring Tension and Release in Music through Improvised Movement (Becca Spencer)

Tension and release are very powerful features in music. This workshop will explore how improvising movement, which focuses on varying energy levels and muscle tension, can elicit different forms of creative flow – both tense and free.

Ring Time (Monica Wilkinson)

In 2013 the composer Sally Beamish was commissioned to write a series of short pieces suitable for exploration in movement (Plastique) for DUK. This workshop explores the project, the teaching pack and how you could it in your own teaching setting.

Freedom of movement in the shoulders and arms (Ruth Jones)

Whether you are an instrumentalist or music teacher, using our arms, shoulders and neck efficiently and without strain is essential in our work. In this workshop Ruth will get you using your upper body in a creative and safe way. Suitable for all, especially those who spend too much time in front of the computer.

Working on your aural training skills at home (Katie Wearing)

It’s easy to lose the skills we developed at university or on one of the Dalcroze training courses once we start teaching. Katie is here to give you some useful ideas for continuing to challenge yourself at home and ‘on the go’.

Taster Day Options

Tuesday 7th August

Gives you the opportunity to experience the three branches of Dalcroze (rhythmics, improvisation and aural training) at your own level whether you are new to Dalcroze or have studied it in the past. The afternoon and evening workshops will be of interest to anyone teaching music and will include a film of Dalcroze being used in private practice as well as using Dalcroze ideas to help teach literacy and numeracy in Early Years. Dalcroze is an active music education method so there will also be the chance to find out how you can get your young students to move. Alternatively, join in a ‘Plastique’ class to see how movement can be used as a means of understanding a piece of music more deeply and fully.

 Thursday 9th August

Gives you the opportunity to experience the three branches of Dalcroze (rhythmics, improvisation and aural training) at your own level whether you are new to Dalcroze or have studied it in the past. The afternoon and evening workshops will be of interest to anyone who is a string teacher and performer and will include a demonstration of teaching aural training in an instrumental lesson and finding out how, by exploring tension and release in the body, you can find greater freedom in your playing. There will also be a class in Tai Chi to help with breathing, body control, flow and dissociation in movement leading on to a class using masks, a phenomenal way to develop ‘presence’ in the performer and bring awareness to what we communicate through body posture and gesture.
